We try our best to keep the following acceptance list accurate and up to date. However, market conditions and the space available in our warehouses fluctuate. Please treat the following guidelines as approximate at best.

We inspect all material and will reject unsatisfactory or overstocked items as necessary.

When bringing us materials we recommend you first contact us by phone or e-mail. It might save you making a special trip.

 

General Criteria

1). All items must be in good reusable condition.

We will NOT take items:

  • DAMAGED beyond repair
  • Requiring excessive ASSEMBLY
  • INCOMPLETE or missing parts

2). Un-safe or hazardous items are not accepted.

We can NOT accept:

  • Items containing hazardous materials such as PCBs or Asbestos
  • Chemicals (paint, glue, caulk etc.)

3). Remember this list is continually changing!

  • Please call before bringing Material
  • Second Use reserves the right to refuse any material
  • Acceptance policies of individual stores will differ depending on stock and space.


 

Doors

Condition Requirements

  • Must be free of rot, bowing, twisting, and structural damage.
  • Must not have holes, deep gouges, or abnormal alterations.

Marginal Styles — (Accepted as Needed)

  • Commercial solid core door slabs
  • Doors taller than 84" or shorter than 75"
  • Louvered closet doors

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Hollow Core Doors
  • Single Pane Aluminum Sliding Doors
  • Sliding Doors not Assembled and Complete
  • Garage doors without all associated hardware

Windows (and Doors with Glass)

Condition Requirements

  • Must be free of rot, bowing, twisting, and structural damage.
  • Thermopane seals must be intact - i.e. NO FOGGING
  • Aluminum and Vinyl windows must be in excellent condition

Marginal Styles — (Accepted as Needed)

  • Double pane aluminum
  • Vinyl or aluminum windows larger than 25 SF
  • Wood sashes
  • Generic older wood windows
  • Non-opening picture style windows
  • Steel frame windows

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Single pane aluminum windows
  • Thermopane panels without frames

Cabinets

Condition Requirements

  • Must be structurally sound. No splitting at joints.
  • Must have all drawers and doors attached and intact. We will not usually accept cabinets whose doors have been removed.

Marginal Styles — (Accepted as Needed)

  • Generic particle board cabinets from 1960s and 1970s.
  • Cabinets without backs.
  • Cabinets over 6' length or height.
  • Blind corner cabinets, or other awkward configurations.

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Low quality cabinets

Bathtubs

Condition Requirements

  • Must be free of chips, cracks and rust on visible porcelain surfaces (except clawfoot and antique tubs).
  • Should be white. (some exceptions made)
  • Should be cast iron or Americast.

Marginal Styles — (Taken as Needed)

  • Steel or Fiberglass Tubs (must be new or almost new)
  • Colored tubs.
  • Clawfoot Tubs without any feet.
  • Large jetted tubs and spas (must be in excellent condition)

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • None

Sinks

Condition Requirements

  • Must be free of chips, cracks (even hairline) and rust (some allowance for vintage sinks).
  • Stainless Steel sinks must be free of dents or damage.
  • Free standing sinks must have legs.

Marginal Styles — (Taken as Needed)

  • Low grade stainless steel sinks.
  • Any color other than white, off white, or stainless.
  • Generic wall mounted sinks

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Cultured marble sink / counter one piece combos from the 1960's and 1970's (modern Corian in good condition is OK).
  • Concrete laundry sinks
  • Sinks used to dispose of paint or harmful chemicals
  • Enameled steel sinks
  • Cheap plastic sinks

Toilets

Condition Requirements

  • Must be free of chips and cracks (even hairline).
  • Should have functional inner hardware. (some allowance for vintage)
  • White color preferred, unless item is of exceptional quality or vintage.

Marginal Styles — (Taken as Needed)

  • Generic (No Name Brand or Plain) cheap toilets

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Toilets in poor condition or with obvious flaws

Lumber

Condition Requirements

  • Must be 6 feet or longer
  • Must be free of rot, excessive checking, twisting, bowing, cracking and crowning
  • Plywood must be flat and at least 1/2 sheet.

Marginal Styles — (Taken as Needed)

  • Painted wood
  • Wood with nails (a few nails is OK)
  • Large Beams (call for our current capacity)
  • Sheetgoods other than plywood or OSB
  • Engineered wood products (fingerjointed, TGI's, etc.)

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Beams longer than 20 feet (possible exceptions)
  • Lumber with creosote

Wood Flooring

Condition Requirements

  • Must be longer than 2 feet
  • Must be free of rot, excessive checking, twisting, bowing, cracking and crowning
  • Tongues and grooves must be intact
  • Denailed and bundled preferred
  • Must be within 1/16 inch of full original thickness

Marginal Styles — (Taken as Needed)

  • Quantities less than 100sf

Unacceptable Styles — (NOT currently taken)

  • Engineered flooring (i.e. Pergo) unless new in package and 100sf+

Other Items Not Currently Accepted

Notes: This list is far from complete - when in doubt call us. We sometimes make exceptions to our acceptance policies if we know someone in the community is looking for the item.

  • Furnaces
  • Electric heaters (including baseboards)
  • Woodstoves (unless antique or to current codes and complete with documentation)
  • Electric hot water heaters
  • Appliances older than 5 years (some vintage are OK)
  • Heating duct
  • Electrical items not up to current codes (some vintage are OK)
  • Partial rolls of fiberglass insulation
