[Drop Off][Pick Up][Strip Out][Compensation]

Our materials originate in many places and come from many people. They come from demo contractors, remodelers, homeowners, developers, building managers, and recycling coordinators. Anyone with surplus or “waste” materials is a potential supplier. If you have materials click on the options above to see how to get them to us!

How to Get Materials to Us

Drop Off

You may bring materials to our retail store where we will happily assess its acceptability. It is best to call Second Use before dropping off materials, we can sometimes save you a trip. Under no circumstances should materials be dropped off after hours.

Pick Up

If the quantity or quality of materials is significant, Second Use can arrange to pick up materials from your job site or storage location, using our own trucks and pick up crew.

If you have a significant quantity of used building materials to dispose of, please contact the nearest Second Use store to discuss the feasibility of a pick up, or to schedule a preview of the items.

Materials to be picked up should be, clean, organized and accessible:

  • Boards stacked, preferably with nails removed or nipped
  • Materials located together near truck loading point
  • Materials clearly identified and distinguished from material not to be picked up.

Strip Out

If a larger remodeling or demolition project figures in your future, consider having Second Use come to your job site and selectively remove the reusable materials. This saves you the time and labor of extraction and reduces your demolition waste and expense. Second Use is a licensed and bonded WA state contractor (SECONUB011N5) and our salvage crews are highly skilled at all facets of material extraction.

We carefully preview all potential strip out jobs and can only undertake those where the quality of material justifies the effort. If you think your job may warrant our service please contact us to schedule a preview.

Compensation: Do We Pay for Materials?

Cash and Credit

We are often asked how much material is worth and whether we will buy it. The short answer: some materials we can pay for, however they must be of higher value and proven from past experience to sell quickly.

We may provide store credit for materials. The amount of credit is typically not large, but we can always provide more credit than cash for any particular item. And, of course, there are many items which we won't even take for free much less offer credit.

Many folks simply donate their materials to us. They avoid steep dump fees and leave content with the knowledge that they did their small part to help the planet.

If we are picking materials up or stripping them out of a structure we can not invest as much in them as if they are delivered to our warehouse.

In general, compensation for materials is modest, but we try to be fair. If you need to get the most cash you can, you will always do better selling through the classifieds. Remember, however, fielding phone inquiries has its own costs, and - we are cheaper than the landfill.

Consignment

We do sell some items on a consignment basis. To qualify, items must meet quality and value standards. Consignment typically entails a 50/50 split of sales proceeds, with payment made 1-2 months after the sale to allow for returns. Labor costs of pickup service are deducted from the consignee's share. We do not usually consign strip out items.

Habitat for Humanity

Second Use is pleased to accept donations of material for Habitat for Humanity. Please contact your nearest Habitat for Humanity chapter for further information on how the donation process works.
