Our Old Fence

Second Use project gallery image

We had to take down some of our fencing and instead of pitching it, we put it to good use. The first idea was to use it as a headboard. I cleaned off the boards with a wire brush and some light sanding, then I used Min Wax furniture pickling paint to lighten it a little. I liked the result so much that when we made over a 1986 extention in the 1840 town house we had just moved into, we decided to raise part of the ceiling to match the slant of the roof and to cover it with more of the fence boards. The round hole will accomodate a fan. The pattern was inspired by the outdoor shutters at the Brandywine Museum in Chadd's Ford, PA.
