Antique Picture Book Prints
$ 395.00
These four pictures are from a book called "Sporting Discoveries, or the Miseries of Hunting." The illustrations were done by Henry Alken, and the first edition of this book was published back in 1817. Now, here's the fun part, dear reader: the publishing house for these prints is listed at the bottom of the page as S & J Fuller's Temple of Fancy at 34 Rathbone Place. The Temple of Fancy closed in 1857- meaning that these prints are somewhere between 166 and 206 years old. The frames, however, we're not sure of, although they have that fancy old-school wavy glass that tells us they might be pretty old, too. In past auctions, full collections of this book have sold for over 4,000 GBP, equal today to $6,966.91. What we have now are plates 2, 4, 5, and 6 out of 7 total, ready for an antiquities fan or a collector of Victorian ephemera to add to their collection. We've also found individual plate prints sold for the modern equivalent of $175 in worse conditions than what we've got here. (This example is a plate print from a different book in the series focusing on Shooting instead of hunting. A full collection of another book in the series, focused on driving, sold for what would be $3,782.)
